Why Jaramillo Landscape?
Concrete that cracks or heaves usually traces back to two problems: inadequate base prep and missing or improperly placed control joints. We do both right. Every concrete project starts with proper excavation and compacted gravel base — the foundation that keeps concrete stable through Idaho's freeze-thaw cycles.
Control joints are placed at correct intervals to direct where concrete flexes and cracks naturally (inside the joint, not across the surface). This is what keeps a patio or sidewalk looking sharp after 10+ years.
We offer broom finish (the standard textured surface for slip resistance), smooth trowel finish, and exposed aggregate (decorative pebbles revealed in the surface). We'll recommend the right finish for your use case.
Our Process
Every step matters — from the base to the finish coat.
Layout & Forming
We stake out the exact footprint, set forms to the correct height with proper drainage slope (minimum 1/8 inch per foot away from structure), and confirm dimensions with you.
Excavation & Sub-Base
Soil is excavated to the correct depth. Compacted gravel base is installed — 4 inches minimum for pedestrian flatwork, 6 inches for vehicle areas.
Reinforcement
Rebar or wire mesh is placed as needed based on the application. Driveways and areas with heavy loads always get rebar reinforcement.
Pour & Screed
Concrete is poured, spread, and screeded level. We work quickly and methodically to maintain consistent texture before the concrete sets.
Finishing
The surface is finished to the specified texture — broom, smooth trowel, or exposed aggregate — with clean edges and consistent appearance across the entire slab.
Control Joints & Curing
Control joints are cut at proper spacing. The slab is protected from rapid drying during cure time (3–7 days) and sealed if requested.
Typical Timeframe
2–5 Days + Cure
Most pours take 1–2 days of prep and 1 day to pour. Concrete needs 3–7 days of cure time before foot traffic and 28 days before vehicle loads. We'll confirm timeline in your estimate.
Cost Factors
- Total square footage
- Concrete thickness (3.5" vs. 4" vs. 6")
- Reinforcement type (wire mesh vs. rebar)
- Finish type (broom vs. exposed aggregate)
- Access for concrete truck
- Site prep & existing demo (if any)

Frequently Asked Questions
Concrete reaches about 70% of its design strength in 7 days — safe for normal foot traffic. It reaches full design strength (100%) at 28 days. We ask that you keep foot traffic off for the first 24–48 hours and avoid vehicle traffic for at least 7 days (28 days is better for heavy vehicles). We'll confirm these guidelines with you before we leave.
We offer broom finish (standard texture, most common for walkways and patios — provides slip resistance), smooth trowel finish (clean, polished look — better for covered patios or indoor-outdoor spaces), and exposed aggregate (seeded gravel revealed in the surface for a decorative, natural look). Each has different costs and slip-resistance characteristics — we'll help you choose the right one.
All concrete develops some cracking over time — that's unavoidable. The goal of proper installation is to control where and how it cracks so it doesn't affect the appearance or structural integrity of the slab. Control joints cut at proper spacing direct cracking into the joints (which are planned for) rather than randomly across the surface.
A perfect match to weathered, aged concrete is difficult because new concrete is lighter and changes color as it cures and weathers over 6–12 months. We can match the texture and finish exactly, and the color difference will diminish significantly over time. If a precise visual match is critical, pavers or stamped concrete are sometimes better alternatives — we'll discuss options with you during the estimate.
