Paver & Flagstone Walkways That Last Decades

Beautiful, durable pathways and patios crafted from concrete pavers, natural flagstone, and stepping stones — installed on a proper base to last for decades.

Typical Timeframe: 2–5 Days

What's Included

Every paver and flagstone installation starts with the right base — that's what separates a project that lasts from one that shifts and cracks.

  • Layout & design consultation
  • Excavation to proper depth
  • Compacted gravel sub-base installation
  • Bedding sand layer
  • Paver or flagstone cutting & placement
  • Edge restraints & border installation
  • Polymeric sand jointing
  • Surface compaction & final leveling

Why Jaramillo Landscape?

The difference between pavers that look great for 20 years and pavers that shift and heave in 2 years is almost entirely in the base preparation. We never skip this step. Every project gets the right depth of excavation, a properly compacted crushed gravel base, and precise bedding sand — regardless of project size.

We work with all major paver materials: Belgard, Unilock, natural flagstone (sandstone, bluestone, travertine), and fieldstone stepping stones. We'll help you choose the material that fits your style, budget, and how the path will be used.

Our finished work is clean, level, and tight — no wobbly pavers, no wide gaps, no sloppy cuts. We take pride in the craftsmanship of every project we complete.

Our Process

Proper installation is everything — we don't cut corners on base prep or compaction.

1

Layout & Design

We stake out the path or patio footprint, verify dimensions, and confirm the pattern, material, and edge treatment with you.

2

Excavation

We excavate to the correct depth (typically 6–8 inches) accounting for the sub-base, sand, and paver thickness.

3

Gravel Sub-Base & Compaction

Crushed gravel is installed in layers and compacted with a plate compactor — this is what prevents settling and shifting over time.

4

Sand Bed & Screeding

A 1-inch bedding sand layer is screeded perfectly level to create a stable, adjustable setting bed for the pavers.

5

Paver Placement & Cutting

Pavers are laid in the chosen pattern, cut precisely at borders, and checked constantly for level and alignment.

6

Edge Restraints, Compaction & Sand Fill

Edge restraints are secured, the surface is compacted, and polymeric sand is swept into joints and activated with water.

Typical Timeframe

2–5 Days

A typical walkway or small patio takes 2–3 days. Larger patios or complex patterns may take 4–5 days. Timeline is confirmed in your estimate.

Cost Factors

  • Total square footage
  • Material type (concrete paver vs. flagstone)
  • Pattern complexity & cut percentage
  • Site prep & excavation depth
  • Edge treatment & border design
  • Access for equipment

Frequently Asked Questions

Pavers are individual units that flex slightly with the ground — they handle freeze-thaw cycles better than poured concrete, which can crack. If a paver shifts or cracks, it can be replaced individually. Pavers also offer more design options and tend to look more natural. Concrete is typically less expensive for large flat areas.

For pedestrian walkways, we install a minimum 4-inch compacted gravel base. For driveways or areas with vehicle traffic, we use 6–8 inches. Idaho's freeze-thaw cycles make proper base depth critical — a thin base is the #1 cause of shifting and settling.

With a proper compacted base and edge restraints, shifting is minimal. Some minor settling can occur in the first few seasons. We include edge restraints on all installations to prevent lateral movement, and we use polymeric sand to stabilize joints. If any settling does occur, individual pavers can be easily re-leveled.

Sealing is optional but recommended for concrete pavers. It enhances color, protects against staining, and helps lock in the polymeric sand. We recommend waiting 6 months to 1 year after installation before sealing, then resealing every 3–5 years. Natural flagstone generally doesn't need sealing unless it's a porous variety.
